A short 24-hour trip of a lifetime! With the UK drumming up unseen temperatures on our journey to London Gatwick, 40 cabin temperatures on board the plane and severe delays, I think it is fair to say, we couldn't wait to get to the Alps...
With brilliant sunshine, clear blue skies and temperatures nudging 30°C, our first impressions couldn't have been better. Before heading up to the centre, Courteny and I 's first stop was in the village for what the only appropriate way to begin our alpine adventure, a fresh coffee and pain au chocolate, watching the world wake up around us. As we sat outside the café, there was already a buzz of activity. Rafts on trailers rolling past with local guides making their way to the river, bikes headed for the mountains and groups of young people gathered, full of excitement for the day ahead. It struck me straight away that Serre Chevalier lives and breathes adventure.
FANTASTIC ACTIVITIES AND A STUNNING BACKDROP
By 08:30, we rocked up at UCPA Serre Chevalier to witness the morning routine. River guides led groups of fully wet suited children down the short three minute path to the river, where a day of white water adventures awaited. The river is practically on the centre's doorstep, making every minute count for the children on activity.
At the same time, climbing and Via Ferrata groups set off in the opposite direction. Fully kitted up, they made the leisurely ten-minute walk to the local crag, perfectly positioned overlooking the centre itself. One of the things that struck us most was just how close everything is. There are no lengthy coach journeys or wasted travel time. Beyond the white water and climbing, the surrounding area offers an incredible variety of activities. Adventure parks hidden amongst the trees challenge confidence and teamwork, while orienteering with the local mountain guides, will develop the children's understanding for the area and the mountain terrain.

Once the activity groups had departed, we were lucky enough to enjoy a tour of the centre with Léa, one of the fantastic team leading operations at Serre Chevalier. As she guided us around, it became obvious why Serre Chevalier has an outstanding reputation. The dining hall is vast, welcoming and designed to bring everyone together after a day in the mountains. Large windows frame breathtaking views up towards the surrounding peaks.
Then came the equipment stores. For anyone with even the slightest love of the outdoors, they're nothing short of impressive. Row upon row of impeccably maintained climbing gear, cowstails, helmets, wetsuits, buoyancy aids, paddles and specialist equipment, all meticulously organised and ready for the next adventure. It's the sort of place that instantly fills you with confidence that every group is equipped to enjoy their activities safely and comfortably.
